Coolamon MiningCoolamon Mining
Coolamon Mining is owned and operated by Jim and Jenny Elliot and has been in existence since 1989. The primary aim of the Company is the promotion and sale of fine quality Australian sapphires to both the jewellery trade and to the public. The larger and more unusual stones are always facetted by local Gemfields cutters, while the smaller calibrated stock is cut in Bangkok by a very reputable factory. The stones are guaranteed to be free of beryllium or any other chemical modification and the only treatment they might receive is a simple heat treatment where necessary, and this is always disclosed to the purchaser. They issue their own Certificates of Authenticity to purchasers to guarantee the origin and authenticity of their sapphires.
Jim and Jenny Elliot first became involved in sapphire mining in 1984 when they were part of the consortium which was awarded the task of building the bitumen road between Sapphire and Rubyvale. By 1989 the road was completed and the Elliots had by then been bitten by the “sapphire bug” and consequently took up leases adjacent to the road reserve which had been mined prior to the building of the road. For many years the blue stone was sold to the Thai buyers who regularly visited the Fields, but it became obvious that this was not sustainable in the long term, so they gradually changed to dealing exclusively in facetted stone. This has required them to travel thousands of kilometres a year to Trade Fairs and Gem Shows, from Cairns to Hobart, and as far as South Australia, always promoting the Central Queensland Gemfields and the beauty of natural Australian sapphires. These days they rely on magazine and internet advertising to promote their product, and have reduced their show involvement to one Gem Club Show in Brisbane, and Gemfest.”
